This was one of those times we had to touch Ruthie to be sure that she was breathing. I seriously hope she was comfortable! Ha!
Ok, for the trauma.....
They never ever get table food, except for when I boil chicken & I have always given them some scraps. Because of that, anytime chicken is cooking, they are in the kitchen at my feet waiting for their bite. Ruthie is totally & completely blind. She really can't see a thing. She has her little path in the house & the yard, but if she gets off of her path, she gets really confused & runs into everything in her path. I was so proud of her on this night because she made it into the kitchen from her bed without running into anything.....I'm sure it was the aroma of chicken that guided her! Anyway, I bent down to put her bite right in front of her face so she could find it & she snapped & BIT MY FINGER!!! She clamped down & would NOT let go because she thought she had the chicken! After what seemed like forever, probably just 10 or 12 seconds though, I managed to unclamp her mouth. Pain would be an understatement for how this felt. IT HURT!!!!! My finger was bleeding very bad, so I just held it under the faucet trying to decide if I would need stitches or not. Poor Ruthie just stood there with her pitiful blank stare still waiting for the bite of chicken that Molly ended up eating when she knocked it out of my hand! Bless her! I don't think she had any idea that she had bitten ME! Anyway, the bleeding finally slowed down enough for a bandaid & it wasn't bad enough for stitches. It was just a small place on the pad of my finger, but what caused the most pain was where her bottom tooth went through my nail on the top side of my finger. Ouch! And yes, I am a total baby & cried like one too! Dan, unfortunately, was at baseball practice and missed this whole episode! So what's the 'take away' (for all of you Akridge people:)?? NEVER EVER try to feed a blind dog by hand!!!! Long story short, my finger ended up getting infected the next day & I had to get an antibiotic. I know it's a huge surprise, but I toughened up & survived the pain! And I can't finish this post without saying a big thanks Dr. Jeremy for enduring all of my calls & texts about what exactly defines an infected finger! I'm not too worried though, because Daniel declared to Dan while greeting with him at church this week, that he is planning to marry Anne Stewart. He then proceded to ask Dan if he thought she would have her hair curled like she did last week!! Seriously?? Anyway, Dan told Jeremy that since we were going to be inlaws down the road, we should get free medical care. I think that's only fair....... :)
