Our last FREE Movie

We met friends last Tuesday at the theater for our last free movie of the summer. We had a big group & just happened upon an empty theater & had it mostly to ourselves. We all enjoyed the movie, Kit Kittredge An American Girl, especially the moms. Thanks to the movie, Daniel has been into 'robbers' these last few days!

Meeting Ms. Elledge

We went to Paine tonight to meet Ms. Elledge. We got there a little early & just before a terrible storm complete with thunder & lightening. It was hardly raining when we got out of the car, but was monsooning by the time we got to the front door of the school. The problem was that the front door of the school was locked, so the few families who got there early were stuck under the breeze way (it was raining too hard to go back to our cars by the time we realized the door was locked). We got wet even though we were covered because the wind was blowing so hard. Daniel, of course, loved being outside during the storm, while Laura Ann was terrified. (I should note for all of you nonTrussvillian blog readers that due to the size of the school, there are many various times for meet the teacher in order to accomodate everyone. Apparently there weren't very many tonight & the administration had forgotten to leave the door unlocked!) Anyway, after all of that drama, the AFT director came to the rescue & let us all in. Daniel was in rare form going into his room. He immediately turned around & said, "I LOVE this room!" It's a good thing since that's where he'll be spending most of his time over the next year! Next he met Ms. Elledge & she is super sweet & like everyone else, loved his curls. She commented multiple times on 'how sweet' Daniel is. I can't wait to see if she still thinks that after the first week of school! Ha! We spent a few minutes exploring his room before Ms. Elledge went over a few things with the parents. This was supposed to be followed by a popsicle party on the playground that didn't happen due to the storm, so we just had popsicles in the classroom. I've been a little worried because he doesn't know anyone in his class, but I'm not sure why. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it in the least. He just helped himself all around the room tonight talking to whoever he wanted including Ms. Elledge, like he's been in Kindergarten for a month. It appears he's all set and ready to go! I suppose that means I should be too?? If anyone knows how to freeze time, I'd sure like to hear about it. I would freeze it at exactly RIGHT NOW!!!!!

Swimming at the Y

Once again this summer, we have had tons of fun swimming at the Y- especially since Daniel has gotten the green swim band. I haven't taken any pictures there this summer & decided to snap a quick one today during the lifeguard's courtesy break when they were sitting on the side of the pool. My friend Melissa, the pathological picture taker (ha!), took tons of pics today, so I'll steal some from her blog to add to this post later!! :)

Blast Off!

Daniel built a rocket yesterday out of some Styrofoam all by himself. When he showed me the finished product, he had used glue to hold it all together & I suggested he use toothpicks instead. That was my only input. My favorite part is the exhaust(streamers) coming out of the bottom- it is kind of hard to see in the picture. So, maybe he'll be an artist after all, just not the kind that use pencils & paintbrushes! :)

A Weekend in Moulton

We spent the weekend in Moulton & had LOTS of fun, despite the extreme heat. We crammed as much as we could into our two 1/2 days- yummy vegetable meals & Gran's famous breakfasts; Buzz Lightyear slip n slide; visit w/ Mamaw & Papaw (finally got Papaw logged into the blog- yay!); visit w/ Reta & Buster, Okie & Trixie; Feeding Buster's cows; church; McDonalds; Watermelon; Splash Pad (Gran took pics w/ her camera & I will add those to the slideshow when I get them); Marshmellow Roast (proof positive that Gran & Papa say no to NOTHING- seriosly in 100 degree weather?); lots of storytelling- even the one that involved a bear hunt; garden picking; a failed fishing trip due to not being able to find worms after digging for awhile; several 4wheeler & lawn mower rides; visit with Grandmama; visit with our newest cousin, Porter & Ruby. Whew!!! What a trip- it was great to spend time with family that we don't see nearly enough even if it was a whirlwind couple of days. I'm so glad we got to get this trip in before school starts!

Layne

Daniel & Laura Ann were thrilled that I finally got to harass another child with my camera last week & gave them a bit of a break! It was my first attempt at doing indoor pics & lighting is obviously NOT my strong point, but thanks to a super cute baby, some of them turned out ok. So here's to PRECIOUS baby Layne & those gorgeous baby blues......

School Supplies

Emily, William, Allie, Anne Stewart, Daniel, Laura Ann

Our Kids of Compassion group met at Wal-Mart last week to buy supplies for some friends at a local school. Daniel & Laura Ann were great helpers finding everything on the list. We finished off our trip with lunch at Burger King & playtime on the playground.

*A funny side note- I explained to Daniel & Laura Ann on the way to Wal-Mart that some kids don't have the money to buy their school supplies and that we were doing this to help them, etc. Daniel asked why they don't have money & I said that their parents may not have a job & couldn't make any money right now. On the way tom Moulton Saturday, Daniel said, "Are Gran & Papa poor?" I asked him why he would think that they are poor. He said, "Well, Papa doesn't have a job & he can't make any money." I then had to explain retirement, but I'm not sure he understood it! Ha!

College Students

Ok, this one really cracks me up- especially because it happened on Dan's watch, not mine!! This is how he found Daniel & Laura Ann this afternoon (and he actually thought to snap a pic w/ his phone- yay Dan!). He said that they were running around upstairs cheering 'Roll Tide' & then they came downstairs- COVERED in marker! Daniel announced that they were college students going to a Bama game & that college students paint their bodies red! Ha! I asked Dan what he said to them & he said nothing & that he just cracked up, laughing. He bathed them before I got home, so I only got the picture, but I did talk to them about it. I told Daniel that he could not do it again, that markers were only for paper, etc. He asked if he could do it when he gets to college & I assured him it would be fine to do then. He then asked if I would paint the 'letter A' for him then & I said 'sure, why not?' I'm not sure how his roommates will feel about his mom doing the body paint, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there. So look out UA freshman class of 2023- Daniel has the "A" covered!

*Sorry for all of the blurry pics- I left my camera in D'ville last week when we picked up the kids. And can I just say that I MISS MY CAMERA!!! We will be reunited soon!:)

The GREEN Swim Band

Daniel finally summoned the courage today to take the swim test at the Y & got a green swim band! YAY!!! He's been able to swim for 2 years, just refused to take the test. He wouldn't do it when we first got there today, but when Emily arrived he all of sudden decided to do it.......I'm thinking to impress Emily?? Whatever the reason, I'm just so glad he finally did it. He was so proud of himself too & had the freedom to go all over the pool without me! Way to go, Daniel!!! We celebrated afterward with chocolate sundaes from McDonalds.

Konomi

We took Daniel & Laura Ann to a Japanese restaurant over the weekend for the first time. Daniel loved every minute of it from start to finish. Laura Ann wasn't too crazy about the big fire at the beginning, but enjoyed the rest of the experience. They both loved the food & ate a ton. And they ate all of their food with chopsticks, granted they were the kid ones that were banded together on one end, but still impressive for a first time. We will definitely be dining at Konomi again soon!
